Roger Diener (born in Basel in 1950, Prof. ETH Architect BSA SIA BDA) started working at the architecture firm of his father, Marcus Diener, in 1976 and then began managing in 1980. In 2000, Diener & Diener Architekten opened a branch office in Berlin. Since 2011, Roger Diener has run the firm in cooperation with Terese Erngaard, Michael Roth, and Andreas Rüedi. Since its beginnings, the firm has occupied itself with residential construction, which it consistently situates anew within the historical idea of the modern city and its development. It has also devoted itself to developing building types, urban-planning designs, redeveloping disused industrial sites, and commercial and research facilities. In particular for the latter, the firm has regularly cooperated with the Kunstgiesserei St.Gallen and Shanghai, for instance, for projects at the headquarters of Swiss Re on the Mythenquai in Zurich or on the Novartis Campus in Shanghai.

Tin Bar, 2015

Tin, chased, polished

For the Novartis Campus in Shanghai, Diener & Diener Architekten commissioned us to produce a custom-made tin bar, à la “le zinc,” as are familiar from French bars, particularly in the Paris of the 1930s. Tin bars are one-of-a-kind pieces and are made by hand to fit the particular spatial circumstances. For this project, the architects visited us at our subsidiary in Shanghai and provided us with a miniature model and the layout of the bar from which to work. Based on samples from a manufacturer in North China, various thicknesses of sheet metal and alloys of the soft metal were first examined and various degrees of gloss for the finish tested. A four-part wood structure that was clad piece by piece with hand-chased sheets of tin in our workshop serves as the substructure. To bend the fine profile of the bar, a working aid was water-jet-cut and the tinplate was pressed into it with a round bar, so that the tinplate was bent inwards. The top sheet and front side were then welded together. All four parts were finally welded together to create a seamless whole and sanded and polished to the degree of gloss desired by the client.
