The Lock, 2007

epoxy resin, polyamide, steel pipe, electromagnet, 184 × 75.5 × 55 cm

Between Urs Fischer’s travel bag and the subway seat, both made of colored epoxy resin, hangs a pink-glazed cake. The chromium steel handrail is welded.

The cake, plate and snail are sintered hollow from polyamide and painted. In the inside is a permanent magnet. In the bag is an electrical inductor, which also generates a magnetic field. A steering device with a small computer measures the attraction of the field 16,000 times per second and regulates the field of tension so that the magnet always remains in balance.
