Untitled (Lamp/Bear), 2005–2006

cast bronze, epoxy primer, urethane paint, acrylic polyurethane topcoat, acrylic glass, gas discharge lamp, stainless-steel framework, 700 × 650 × 750 cm

Urs Fischer had a teddy bear he sewed himself and a Bakelite nightlight digitalized with a light-ray scanner. Both objects were assembled as a digital form and scaled to 7.2 meters. In cooperation with the model-builder Lukas Metternich, the form was milled in Styrofoam. The model was assembled in our project studio and coated with polyurethane resin. In his exhibition in the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, Urs Fischer showed the model of the bear outdoors. The model was then brought to our partner foundry in Shanghai, where we produced three bronze castings. There is functioning light bulb made of Plexiglas with a diameter of 1.6 meters inside the lamp. The surface of the lamp is patinated and the bear is sprayed with a 2K matte paint. The total weight is 17 tons. Of the three sculptures produced, one is located in Paris, one in Montauk, USA, and one in Connecticut, USA.
